Udit Bhandari, Founder & CEO Indimoto.com met with Sir Richard Branson in New Delhi to discuss his carpool initiative, what has been done and what can be done to promote it further as a means to control CO2 emissions.
/Global Warming News Articles/ - January 30, 2008 - Indimoto.com made carpooling possible for millions across urban India in 2006 when it launched India's 1st online carpool classifieds where commuters could find matches based on city, time and pin code, at the click of a mouse. Since then thousands have made carpools through Indimoto's platform and awareness about carpooling has grown by leaps and bounds. Now Indimoto's efforts have been recognized by Virgin chief Sir Richard Branson himself. During his brief tour to India as part of the business delegation traveling with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Virgin chief Sir Richard Branson met with Udit Bhandari, CEO Indimoto.com and discussed how the website has been propagating the 'carpool cause' inthe countrywhich is the fastest growing automotive market in the world.
Sir Richard Branson is a key member of the global climate change juggernaut which is aiming at creating awareness and his company Virgin has pioneered many initiatives such as developing green fuels to reverse global warming. "Our brief discussion was very enriching, Branson was of the view that carpool is a great tool to control CO2 emission in India which is the fastest growing auto market and would soon see an explosion in the number of cars on the road after the Tata Nano ($2500 car) makes four wheeled mobility affordable to millions" says Udit Bhandari. "He appreciated Indimoto.com's pioneering effort in promoting carpooling in India and felt that we should involve various stakeholders including the Government and the private sector to make the concept feasible and self sustaining" adds Bhandari. Indimoto.com is going to reach out to private companies to promote carpooling amongst their employees and also garner financial support for the website which is currently free to use. The website aims to have 10,000 carpool request sregistered in 2008 itself from across India.
"There is an urgent need to create awareness amongst urban commuters about the benefits of carpooling primarily to reduce the harmful effects of CO2 emissions from vehicles which is aiding rapid global warming. Moreover with crude oil prices touching $100 a barrel, governments and commuters alike need to look at avenues to reduce their dependency on the pricy fuel" says Udit Bhandari, Founder & CEO of Indimoto.com.
